Clifton Colts hosted Cinderford Colts in the Gloucestershire Junior County Cup on Sunday and came away with a narrow and well fought victory 15-12. The win was more rewarding as Cinderford came into the match undefeated for the season. As expected it was a hard fought game against a strong and very well organised side so not surprising it was the visitors who took the game to Clifton from the first whistle and dominated the opening 15 minutes. However against the run of play Clifton scored a try from a 5m lineout with a catch and drive, Max Creswall getting the score. Whist Clifton then had a long period of possession they failed to capitalise and the half ended 5 – 0. Again Cinderford dominated the early stages of the second half and scored a deserved try by Luke Crunden. The game appeared to be running away Clifton before an excellent 50m break was made by scrum half Ollie Bowden who fed Marcus Fatoye to get the touchdown with about 10mins remaining. Indecision by Clifton deep in their own half from the restart carelessly gave possession back to Cinderford which eventually led to a second try by Luke Crunden. The conversion gave Cinderford what appeared to be a winning 2 point lead, however a tired Clifton team made one final push in the closing stages of the match and from another catch and drive close to the Cinderford line, the ball was popped to winger Ben Foley to score in the corner with the final play of the game. An excellent win against a very good side. Final score 15 – 12. |
