Clifton v Sydney College 18th October 1873 PDF Print E-mail

For a few years now copies of major newspapers have been available online courtesy the British Library. A new website in partnership with them is now online at

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

This has made available many more newspapers and with it many more reports of rugby matches. The earliest match I have found so far in which Clifton played was on 18th October 1873 when we played Sydney College from Bath.

This was the second season for Clifton against the school that provided their first opposition in their inaugural season the previous year. Rugby was not widely followed in those days. There were probably very few spectators to watch a match played on a field next to Coldharbour Farm just outside Bristol. What is significant about this match, apart from the rare match report in the Bath Chronicle is the fact that the Sydney College side were captained by Lennard Stokes, not just the brother of the first and current (1873) England rugby captain, Frederick Stokes, but also a man who was destined to also captain England himself and become president of the RFU.

As Lennard Stokes is listed in the 1871 census at Sydney College it is highly likely that he played for Sydney College against Clifton in 1872. Clifton’s first ever match. As newspaper reports are added daily I will hopefully find details of this match one day.

Lennard Stokes, like his brother, joined Blackheath and was first selected to play for England on 15th February 1875 against Ireland in the first international played between the two sides. Five years later he would captain England. In all he was capped 12 times over a period of six years, a time when very few internationals were played. Former Clifton player and president of the RFU from 1888 to 1889, said in 1892 that "I do not believe that there is a three-quarter back playing, who, if we could transplant him to the past, could cover the entire field as Lennard Stokes used to

Stokes was one of the greatest kickers of his time. He scored 40 points for England. In 1881 he dropped a goal against Scotland from 80 yards. He retired from rugby to concentrate on his medical career but served on the RFU committee for over 50 years.

The College buildings were originally the Sydney House and then Sydney Hotel, named after Lord Sydney the Home Secretary (1781-1782), as were the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. They became Bath Proprietary College in 1855 and were later renamed Sydney College. From 1877 they were known as Bath College. In 1891 the original 99-year lease of Sydney Gardens expired and its financial affairs had to be wound up. The house gardens were sold to Bath City Council in 1909. The building remained empty and derelict until 1913 when it was acquired by the trustees of the Holburne of Menstrie Museum. They are now the Holburne Museum of Art
