"We needed this win"
- Matt Salter Clifton Head Coach

CLIFTON ended a four-game losing streak with a 50-15 victory over National League Two South basement-battlers Launceston at Cribbs Causeway.

Clifton scored six tries through Alex Giltrow, Ian Clark, Rhys Luckwell, Callum Roberts and Elias Caven, with a penalty try awarded after Caven was held back as he attempted to reclaim a kick through that would have added a second score to his tally.

This was the second time this season the Henbury-based side has put 50 points past the Cornish All Blacks. James Mackay and Brad Barnes hit the post three times between them with kicking attempts at goal.

The departure of No 8 Mike Uren with concussion early in the game meant the Clifton back row was essentially made up of three No 7s, with Luckwell, Max Woodward and replacement Fergus Manners all specialist openside flankers.

But the statistic that will most likely grab the attention was the number of cards brandished by exchange referee Luis Caviglia, who dipped into his pocket no fewer than eight times – five for the visitors, including a straight red to lock James Tripcony for a dangerous no-arms tackle on replacement scrum-half George Prince, and three for Clifton for technical offences.

There wasn't much to choose between the sides in the opening quarter, with the visitors giving as good as they got. But once Clifton got a few scores on the board, the body language and attitude of both sides began to morph.

The home side grew in confidence with every passing minute, while Launceston's discipline as a result of Clifton's increasing dominance, began to take a tumble.

Clifton built a commanding 28-3 lead by half-time, with Giltrow, Clark and Luckwell all crossing for tries, while the metronomic boot of Mackay added three penalties and two conversions.

Mackay added another three points a minute after the restart, before the visitors hit back with a try from prop Bobby Dougard, converted by stand-off Fraser Honey.

The impressive Roberts, who by now had shifted from the wing into the full-back position, nipped in to steal an interception and raced in from 65 metres for a try, converted by Barnes.

Launceston No 8 Jordan Luke pulled another five points back before Caven, who came on as a second-half replacement, managed to squeeze into the corner for Clifton's fifth try. The Bristol duel-registered flyer looked all set to double his try count, but was hauled back in the dead-ball area when he was favourite to win the race to the touchdown. Will Pomphrey added the extras to the penalty try.

Clifton head coach Matt Salter said: "We needed this win. We've lost the last few games, and started to lose our way a bit. But this win should help us regain some confidence going into the second part of our campaign.

"I felt a bit sorry for Launceston. They're struggling down at the bottom of the table, and got on the wrong side of the referee. We lost three to the-bin ourselves, but by then the game had already been won."
