Clifton outgun promotion hopefuls

Fun in the sun as Clifton Rugby secure memorable win over high flying Chinnor RFC.

Clifton’s 21 point lead early in the second half was deserved and testament to their ball retention, strong forward presence, deft handling, strong defence and ability to inject pace into the game when attacking from all parts of the field. After a keenly contested start clever handling allowed wing Finlay Sharp to score with James Newey converting.Chinnor lost two players to the bin and Clifton pressure gave prop Alex Giltrow the opportunity to cross with Newey adding the extras.

The home pack was strong in the tight and loose with second row Mike Uren ever prominent and his team made very few mistakes against the promotion contenders
After the re-start slick handling led to home centre Sam Harrison crossing with Newey increasing the advantage. Chinnor then capitalised on a Clifton yellow with Jonny Bentley scampering over and converting his try. This score was quickly followed by another Chinnor score by Koree Britton to put the visitors back in contention.

Further speedy handling by the Bristolians saw Malcolm Peacock score from a break by Ian Clark. Chinnor were not done and responded with a well taken try by Bentley It was however Clifton in injury time who broke down a Chinnor attack for Will Pomphrey to run the length of the field for a try converted by the dependable Newey.
