The best way to keep up to date with Clifton Rugby Club

Colts Update February 2017

1 year ago By Ian Vaughan

Clifton Colts are a thriving part of the club.

Update from Jon Maycock

We currently have a squad in excess of 30 members spread across those U18 & U17 on 1st September 2016. The vast majority of our squad is in the lower year group & despite fewer players in the upper age bracket, we have fared very well to date in the GFRU U18 Development League, having lost only 2 games & on track to get into the play-off stages. We have several members of the squad involved with the Bristol EPDG and DPP set up and more importantly have continued to recruit new players to the club, some of whom are completely new to rugby.

Having progressed from junior rugby, but not yet fully fledged senior players, our focus on player development and a transition path is at the forefront of what we offer. We’re currently a third of the way through a 2 year program, where the ultimate goal is to deliver as many as possible players into senior rugby, whether that’s into a 1st, 2nd or 3rd team environment. Some may have the opportunity to progress further, but key to the success of the program is that we have guys enjoying their rugby. Form a coaching perspective, we have a range of RFU qualified coaches, access to coaches from the senior set up together with some specific ‘clinic’ where we’ve enlisted the support of recent Premiership & International experience.

Connection to the club beyond 70 minutes of rugby once a week is key to this transition and we have attempted to foster this environment with activities including various tours, Friday night coach trips away and Saturday matches ahead of 1stXV games.

Having had the most successful start to a Colts season at Clifton for some years, with 11 games played before Christmas & a win rate of 82%, we’re keen to attract further players to develop & progress to a successful close out of the 16/17 season before building through pre-season to 17/18 and further transition through age group competitions and exposure to senior games when players are ready.

We train together with the senior sides on Tuesday at 7pm and Colts specific training on Thursday 6.30pm-8pm.
