Clifton Fall To Newport Farewell

On a grey day in Shropshire, two sides with different fortunes met for the last fixture of the season. Hosting club Newport Salop, relegated, were playing for fun and pride; Clifton, safe in third place, celebrating a developing, youthful side with much promise.

Back on the opening day of the season, Newport showed intent at Station Road, losing to Clifton 19-10 in a well contested match. Their recent results against the Cornish sides evidence of a team able to win in this league.

A well-attended match started in good spirits and the first half finished close, with the hosts leading 21-17. Tries through Clifton debutante Hazel, Kilbane and Nixon were matched by well worked scores from Waqadau, Wells and Dever to keep the contest exciting.

Clifton’s scrum dominance was subcutaneous, gradually asserting control and dictating the flow of play. However, the Trouts’ spirit kept them coming back as Clifton retained the lead through a Cripps converted score on the hour (21-24).

The second half remained tight, and Newport's Griffiths scored with just minutes left. The effervescent crowd cheered a display of rugby that, while without further scores entertained thoroughly. Newport held on and deserved the win; Clifton had a chance to steal victory at the end but the ever-present wind pushed the effort wide.

Best wishes to Newport Salop for next season, whose style and hospitality will be missed in the national leagues.

Well done to Clifton, who have an energy and joy in play that epitomise why level 4 is the best rugby to watch in England.

The Summer will be too long – see you next season!
