National League 2 South match report

The only trophy we won this day, was the blood and sweat we left on the pitch…. and it was enough

The score line flattered the hosts who took five points from their win as a result of two tries in the final minutes of this keenly contested fixture. During those moments intervention by the assistant referee disallowed a Clifton touch down by Finlay Sharp from his chase of a well judged kick when he was adjudged to have run from an offside position.

Even die hard Reds supporters felt their visitors earned more from the game which saw only one score in the first half from home number 8 Marriott converted by Exeter Academy player Joe Elderkin.

This score against the run of play followed a period of strong Clifton pressure with their scrum and line out presenting a force throughout the game. Charlie Bullimore and Dave Wheeler were prominent in the loose. The loss of the injured Alex Giltrow soon after kick off did not diminish the pack’s impact.

An Elderkin try and conversion were cancelled out by Sharp dashing into the corner with James Newey converting well from the touch line. Good line kicking by Newcastle bound Matavesi kept Redruth in the game.

It was very much game on until those final stages when Redruth attacked the Piggy Lane and Hell Fire Corner end to take advantage of rare lapses in the Clifton defence to score through Dean Bonds and Elderkin with one being converted.

Forced to field a re-shuffled back division through injuries to key players Clifton can take many positives from this performance which showed considerable commitment and desire to win in the face of one of the most partisan crowds in the national leagues!
