Clifton Rugby 29 - Henley Hawks 22

By Roger Opie

Clifton secured their fourth successive win and deserved to consolidate their league position with a hard fought victory over the Hawks who competed until the final whistle.
Henley took an early lead when lock David Hyde burst through to score with George Jackson converting. Clifton full back Callum Roberts soon hit back with a strong run to score behind the posts with Brad Barnes adding the conversion. Barnes impressed throughout the match with his decision making, breaks and strong tackling.

The Clifton scrum was dominant with prop Giltrow on great form and this pressure created a penalty try to increase the lead which Jackson reduced with a penalty. A long weaving run by flanker Max Woodward presented winger Will Pomphrey with a further home try. Just before the interval Henley pressure earned a penalty try to cut the Clifton half time lead to two points.

Although down to 14 players a Barnes penalty increased the Clifton lead and he then joined his forwards to emerge as the try scorer and duly added the extras. The Clifton midfield made some strong bursts which were matched by Henley spreading the ball wide
Henley came back strongly and Tom Emery scored to put some pressure back on Clifton but their defence held out to claim the five points and reduce lingering worries about the relegation zone.
