Clifton win at Redruth for the first time in almost 20 years.

The last time we had won at Redruth was back in the last century when we sneaked home by a point on the 8th November 1997.

It was an exciting game as both sides were prepared to give the ball plenty of air and with fifteen minutes of normal time remaining Will Pomphrey seized a on a cross kick from Charlie Foley to dive over in Hell Fire Corner to level the scores.

Shortly afterwards we lost the services of scrum half Mitch Spencer with a leg injury and he was replaced by duel registered Callum Sheedy and we continued to put the home side under pressure and with over ten minutes of injury time played the decisive play was acted out. Our pack worked hard to set up the position for a drop goal and 18 year old Sheedy showed maturity beyond his years to slot the ball between the posts for the crucial score with the final kick of the game.

Darren described the victory as sweet but could not describe his sides performance as perfect as they let a couple of scoring chances slip away and also felt their game management needed to improve but this would not be discussed tonight

Playing up the slope we could have gone in front from the start. Redruth kicked off and they failed to gather the bouncing ball. Pomphrey gathered the ball and raced up the slope and only a despairing tackle by Tom Notman prevented him from scoring.

Both sides had pace in their backs moving the ball wide at every opportunity. Redruth could not find a way through our defence while we looked dangerous on the break.

Eventually good work by Pomphrey created the chance for Ben Foley to go over for an unconverted try. This was swiftly followed by a penalty from Charlie.

Redruth opened their scoring with a long range penalty from Ashley Hosking who just before the break converted a try scored by Notman to put his side at the break.

The pattern of the game change at the break as we took control up front keeping the home side penned in their own half.

It was against the run of play when the home side stretched the lead when Robin Wedlake intercepted deep into Hell Fire Corner and raced half the length of the field before linking with Chris Fuca whose long pass enabled Murray Western to touch down for a converted try.

Almost immediately we struck back with forwards coming onto the ball at pace as continued to press as we pinned the home side deep in their own half. We spurned a couple of scoring chances before Charlie chipped to the corner and Ben scored with Charlie adding the extras, Hosking kicked a second penalty and then came Pomphrey ‘s try to level the scores.

Clifton were until the final act totally in charge but the home defence held firm
