A depleted Clifton team pick up a crucial bonus point in their relegation struggle

We travelled to the south coast in search of the three points which would take us clear of the relegation spot but sadly it was not t0 be.

It was an odd looking team as the squad of twenty only included seven backs and no recognised No 10. Andy Uren fitted into the 10 shirt and did not look out of place.

The side produced its best performance since early February when we won at Chinnor and the clever use of interchanges ensured our pack was dominant for most of the game.

Well lead by Joe Quinn we controlled both scrum and lineout throughout. Our defence was watertight for the majority of the and our pack was our main attacking weapon.

We spent long periods of the game encamped in the home twenty two but struggled to break the whitewash.

The home sides speedy backs were a threat but sound tackling kept them at bay

Worthing had an early period of pressure and eventually scrum half Calum Waters broke the defensive line to score with full back Matt Mclean converting.

We then enjoyed a period of dominance and it was against the run of play when centre Ben Loosemore seized a loose ball on the half way and raced clear to the corner.

Both centres Dan Wells and Sam Harrison went close being bundled into touch close to the corner flag.

Our reward came when following a driving maul following a line out Rupert Freestone forced his way over for a try converted by Wells.

We had the better of the third quarter and went close to scoring from close range but could not find our way over.

Worthing used their pacey backs but were held by some resolute defence but eventually Waters made a break when his forwards turned the ball at a ruck to put Loosemore in for his second try.

Almost immediately the home side struck again when forwards and backs combined and replacement John Whittall went over by the posts with Mclean converting.

We almost immediately responded when again from close range Freestone went over with Wells converting.
With the game going into injury time we were awarded a penalty and Wells opted for a kick which went straight between the posts to gain us a crucial bonus point.
