Few people could be left in any doubt of the Wanderer’s league intentions this Saturday after an impressive display resulted in a 14 try demolition of Whitehall 2nds.
With players spread across the club in order to fulfil all 4 fixtures the 2nds took to the field with the bare 15 despite some early anxieties cruised to an early score as winger Reuben Caven touched down after just 2 minutes.
Within the first quarter Clifton arguably had 80% of the possession and by the 20th minute had racked up scores from impressive centre Luke Blizzard, debutants Ed Tait and a spectacular 40 yard break by new prop Ben Christie.
Scrum-half Alex Haines ensured that his kicking boots were fitted comfortably and slotted the first 4 of his afternoon’s conversions.
Whitehall took small consolation from a well-directed penalty kick after Clifton’s back row were guilty of not rolling away in the tackle.
Clifton continued to nullify any attempt by Whitehall to get a foothold on the game and the game appeared to be heading out of sight when Captain Josh Goddard powered over from 8 yards out followed swiftly by dynamic No.8 Louis Wolf.
Anticipating a Whitehall restructuring of a game plan in the second half Clifton looked to maintain their discipline and shape.
It was second row Mike Westlake though that updated the score sheet for the first time in 3 years on 42 mins as he blasted his way through the Whitehall line with 3 defenders attached to his shirt.
Westlake’s try spurred on the young home side as Haines himself darted over followed in quick succession by Blizzard, Caven, flanker Max Woodward and debutant full-back Tom Ballack.
All credit to Whitehall who after 70mins finally put together a period of sustained pressure and after some hard forwards graft barrelled over to ensure any chances of a zero try whitewash were diminished.
It was prop Christie’s second try in the dyeing minutes that secured him the deserved man-of-the-match award again he linked perfectly with the back line to score from 35 yards out.
As a the Referee began to look at his watch it was full-back Ballack who cut the visitors line for the final time and unselfishly put centre Mike Cross under the posts to claim a place on the final score sheet.
Final score 92-10.
The Wanderers march on.
