Clifton U10s take on the might Windscombe plus hail, blustery wind and bitterly cold weather.....

Once again we faced unplayable pitches at Clifton with what has become some of the worst weather on record. Not to be determined Clifton U10s made an early call in the week and decided to play at our new home ground....Clifton Downs.

The weather forecast was grim but Winscombe wanted to play the mighty Clifton U10s and we were not going to say no.

It was raining at 10am so both sides bravely waited inside their cars for the rain to pass, and it did, briefly. We decided to have a quick 10 minute warm up followed by a game with "as many players each side has on the pitch at the same time!" It was far to cold for players to wait on the touchline.

The game stared with 12 v 12. The extra players on the pitch and the poor conditions made a flowing game almost impossible. By half time Clifton were leading 3-0 following tries by Jake, Ben BM and Tom. The second half we were playing into the wind, and whilst the photos don't look too bad it was windy at times. Full time came after some great performances by both sides. The final score was 6-1 with tries by George Ben BM and Matty. The score would have been higher except for some superb try saving tackles by Winscombe.

We (the parents) were ready to rush home but Windscombe wanted to play another half, or is that a third? We lost a few players to frost bite and cricket so we were down to 9 players but happy to take on the Winscombe 12.

The second match ended up at 3-1 with tries from Ben BM (2) and Jake. A superb result with only 9 players.

Every boy who played today will not forget the conditions. Most of them would have happily gone home at the start had we called it off, but by the end they were pleased that they had played.

Ben BM had a one man game and made some great ball carrying runs. My man of the match though goes to Tom. He is so quiet but when he gets the ball he runs straight. The first touch of the ball he made 20m and set up the first try. He had a couple of other good runs and has improved enormously.
