U14 Tourists Triumph at Taunton

Following a great time on tour we headed for Taunton’s ground on the Sunday morning. We arrived with about 45 minutes to prepare which may have contributed towards our slow start to the game.

Starting slowly allowed Taunton to gain the upper hand and to go ahead early in the game as our set piece struggled and some decision making in the backs was poor. Going behind further was preventing by some strong tackling in defence which began to frustrate Taunton as we limited their opportunities to score. Once we settled down and got into our stride we were able to take the game to Taunton with our forwards doing well to turn things around in the scrum and breakdowns to provide the backs with a great platform to play from which we took full advantage of with some great lines being ran, some great interchange passes and excellent support running from the whole team. This allowed us to go in at half time with our noses in front.

Further improvements in the second half allowed us to pull away from Taunton to finish with a convincing win. Importantly these changes included the back three changing their approach of trying to run the ball from our own 22 metre area to opting to produce some excellent tactical kicking to turn the Taunton defence and to put a lot of pressure on their full back allowing the whole team to get some ‘go forward’.

It was great to finish the season on a real high against a good team, we now need to carry this level of performance and decision making into next season where we can build on it and provide a foundation for becoming the best team within the region.
