Clifton vs W-S-M

Arriving with 14 men to play against a squad of 25 boys at Weston, we thought we might be in for a tough encounter. 70 minutes and 14 tries later we realised that whilst the Weston team was physically bigger than us, the pace, power, skill, tenacity and the commitment of the boys was enough to overcome the opposition.

From the kick-off we were up for this and we realised that if we played with speed and width and defended well, we could run the opposition off the park. We tackled well, competed hard for the ball in the rucks and mauls and when we had the ball, we showed good skills with the decision making, passing and offloading to make the necessary scores.

Was it perfect, no? We let in a soft try to let Weston back into the match early on and some of the defence and continuity play needs working on, but there was some fantastic handling from the team, typified by Campbell’s precise 20, yard flat pass at pace, which demonstrated both the general skills of the boys and the results of the hard work, they do at training.

The willingness to run the ball from anywhere, the support lines of the boys, coupled with the pace and power that we played the game at, was a pleasure to watch, but we can still improve.

Whilst Moniee managed to rack up 6 tries with some powerful running, it was good to see the spread of tries around the team, with Ethan, Sam, Ben, Zak, Alec and Lewis M all getting over the whitewash. Well done also to Henry for his well taken conversion; with his deadly accuracy, it will certainly keep Freddie on his toes!

We must thank Weston for being good hosts and loaning us a couple of players. The spirit with which they played contributed to the game and look forward to welcoming them back to Station Road in the New Year.
