Second Half pressure proves difference as Clifton close out derby

Dings 10

Clifton produced an accurate and physical second half performance against local rivals Dings Crusaders at a packed Shaftesbury Park to bag 4 points and their second win of the season.
On a sweltering hot day, Clifton's dominance both sides of the ball in the second half proved to be the difference after what was a typically edgy and tense first half that saw both sides scrap for the upper hand.

At half time Clifton went into the sheds holding a slender three-point lead, but it was a different story in the second-half with Clifton out-scoring Dings by 20 points to nil to maintain their unbeaten record at Dings' new home.

Clifton took an early lead with a penalty from fly-half Brad Barnes on 20 minutes. Dings then hit back five-minutes later with a try from former Clifton wing Ian Clark, following some good play from Cliftons errors. Ollie Millner added the extras to give Dings a 7-3 lead.

Barnes kicked another penalty before the first of two tries from centre Sam Harrison. Milner kicking a penalty to make it 13-10 just before the half.

However, Clifton began to assert their dominance in the second half through very good defensive sets that forced errors from the opposition. The Lavender & Blacks looked comfortable without the ball and looked dangerous on the transition.

Barnes, who continued to impress following his performance last week, finished with 18 points. He added two further penalties and the extras after former Dings back-rower Mike Uren went over when Clifton were down to 14 men, with Mitch Spencer being sent to the sin bin for persistent offside.

Clifton looked to kill the game off towards the end, and when Harrison crossed in the 72nd minute to seal the game, again following relentless pressure on a tiring Dings pack. In all it was a very accurate and clinical performance and Clifton left with their 2nd win at Shaftesbury Park in 2 seasons.

Clifton now look ahead to next week the they entertain Bury St. Edmunds at Station Road, next Saturday.
