Rugby union player Daniel Wells has been suspended from all sport for a period of four years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV)

Clifton Rugby Football Club can confirm that former 1st team player Dan Wells has been banned from all participation in sport for 4 years, commencing 18 May 2018.

Prohibitive substances were found in a doping control sample provided after the fixture between London Irish Wild Geese and Clifton RFC on Saturday 14 April 2018.

Clifton RFC and the RFU condemns drug use in sport. It is harmful to the health of players, totally contrary to the spirit of rugby and the RFU is committed to protecting all players' fundamental right to participate in doping free rugby.

The RFU runs policies and programmes for both anti-doping and illicit drugs that Clifton RFC subscribe to and fully support.

Extract from UK Anti-Doping report:
“UKAD sends out clear messages about supplement use and the associated risks. Mr Wells claimed a contaminated supplement was to blame for the presence of the prohibited substances in his system, and although he was not able to prove it, this case highlights the importance of athletes being aware of the dangers of supplement use and the need to undertake the necessary checks in relation to those they choose to take.

“There can never be a guarantee that any supplement will be free from contamination and therefore, we always advise athletes to take a food-first approach to nutrition where possible.”

Clifton RFC remains supportive of Dan and wishes him well in a difficult situation.
