Clifton beat Newquay

There's no doubt that our defeat to Newquay while on tour in Cornwall at the end of last season stung a bit.
Yes we were down to just 16/15 players and that's not to mention the fact we had played two tough games the day before.
So we were able to give ourselves plenty of excuses for losing - but the fact was that Newquay were clearly a very strong side with several powerful ball carriers and the defeat (though narrow) was justified.
So from our point of view there was doubtless a bit of an edge to this return fixture.
Or so you would have thought.
There wasn't the usual intensity or accuracy in our play early on, not helped by playing into a bitterly cold and strong wind.
It took a 75 metre run from Matt - who was outstanding all game - to get us to their try line.
After some good forwards work we spun the ball out and Matt fought his way past several defenders to cross the line for the first of his four tries.
Newquay then gained some control and scored two tries, converting one, to make it 5-12.
Then came the play of the game for us with some great handling. Hats off to Ryley who received the ball out wide and gave the perfect pass in a two-on-one situation to provide Matt's second try.
Turning around 10-12 down was not a bad situation given the wind.
And so it proved as we scored 34 points in the second half to Newquay's 7.
Our try scorers were Hugo, Sam Sproull, George, Tom Dibble and two from Matt. One of the conversions - from Ben - was spectacular.
George scored from a restart, making a great catch on our 10 metre line and then racing down the touchline.
Well done to the whole squad who all played a big part today.
And thanks to the ref - should he read this - who rarely put a foot wrong according to the hard-to-please experts on our sideline!
And while we're at it, thanks to Newquay for coming to play us. We hope it was a good trip - at least Exeter won - again :(
