Clifton dominant in wins over Cardiff Met

1st XV run out 56-21 winners as Wanderers win 27-14.

Clifton put in a strong performance in their second pre-season fixture as they ran out 56-21 winners over Cardiff Met at Station Road.

Clifton were keen to build upon their positive start last week against Taunton and made a number of changes, notably in the backline with Marcus Nel and Alex Howman making their long-awaited debuts. Clifton started well, applying pressure in Met's 22 at the start and making an impression within 5 minutes after scoring from a driving line-out. It was to be the story of the half as, despite a moment of brilliance from Met's outside backs from a well judged cross-field kick that resulted in a superb try, Clifton had nearly all the ball in the first half.

Pace, power and accuracy were evident in Clifton's attack. The forwards imposing their physicality on the students from Cardiff and the backline causing problems in the wider channels. Clifton once or twice forced the ball, but the ability to be consistent and apply pressure in the 22 was pleasing.

Naturally with large numbers of changes, the game opened up in the closing stages and saw both Cardiff and Clifton have success against tiring defences in the heat. Matt Salter was pleased with the overall outcome:

"We did some really good stuff today; we put together good attacking play with the ball and caused them problems; some of them we didn't convert but it's about understanding what we can and can't do in the right areas of the field at this stage. We will take a lot of positives from this, defensively we were strong as well but with somethings we need to iron out.

We can be pleased, but we are not getting ahead ourselves. It is about building into the first game of the season and the league campaign. We are back in again on Tuesday and then have another opportunity against Old Reds on Thursday to work on a few more aspects of our game."

The Wanderers also ran out 27-14 winners over Cardiff Met Archers in a pulsating game that kicked off earlier in the day.

Clifton now look ahead to their final pre-season game against Old Red's on Thursday 26th August at Station Road, Kick-Off 19:30. The clubhouse and bar will be open and entry to the game is free as two local teams go head to head before their respective league campaigns.
