Clifton v Sale 1974

The picture relates to a cup game that features in the history book by Paul Casey in the chapter on famous matches.

11th February 1974, he says that it was perhaps the most memorable match to be played at Eastfield Road. Sale beat Clifton 9pts to 3pts. and reached the quarter final. Clifton held an early lead up to the final minutes of the match, the conditions were appalling and the pitch due to earlier heavy rain resembled a ploughed field at the end.

The Sale side featured British Lion Peter Stagg and England scrum half Steve Smith who withdrew with an injury.

The Clifton side was:- Paul Barclay; Nigel Bourne; Pete Johnson; Mario Polledri; Keith Lowe; Steve Gregory; John Cannon; Graham Mansfield; Simon Luxmoore; John Raine; Pat Donovan; Peter Brown; David Tope; Grant Watson; Gary Rogers;

The first team captain that year was Chris Jenkins who was unable to play due to shingles.
