Clifton keep the pressure on league leaders

Clifton keep the pressure on league leaders

Mike Barber28 Mar 2022 - 08:40

Clifton 47 - 34 Bury St Edmunds

Clifton came out convincing winners in a contest where the score line didn't reflect their dominance. Having raced into a 35-5 lead at half time, Clifton played some superb flowing rugby with Marcus Nel and Zak Ward causing problems both sides of the ball. Bury could find no way through and were seemingly leaking points at every Clifton attack. Scores from Luke Cozens, Alex Howman, Will Mortimore and Marcus Nel. Dan Broady added a further score before half time, Cozens converting them all before Bury hit back through Oli Watson.

The second half saw Bury come out fighting with Ruardhri Watson scoring before Brad Talbot went over for Clifton, Cozens again adding the extras. Clifton began to fade away in the second half, seemingly having punched themselves out and indiscipline cost them dearly, four tries from Leeson, Williams, Jeffery and Affleck, only punctuated by another Howman sure, provided Bury with ground on the home side but it was never enough to threaten Clifton's lead.

Matt Salter was full of praise for his side, but insisted that they must do better at reacting to the momentum swings in the game. "We started really, really well. We played some great rugby but we spoke at half time about ensuring their scoreboard didn't tick up slowly - keeping them under pressure as they weren't really stretching us. We didn't do that, and that in part has been a theme throughout the season where we give ground too easily. We need to address that in the coming weeks as anything can happen in the league and we cannot sit there at the end of April thinking what if. We have to be more ruthless and close out games"
