Redruth cemented their status as the top side in the league as they scored 8 tries to overrun Clifton on a sobering day for the Lavender & Blacks. In perfect conditions both in the air and on the ground the Reds turned in a performance to store in the memory banks. Strong forward play and incisive running by the backs coupled with a defence that gave no ground made it a comprehensive victory for Redruth. A rousing chorus of Trelawney echoed around the Terry Pryor Stand as the players left the field.
Clifton kicked off playing towards Hellfire Corner but it was the Reds who stuck first. A maul from a five yard lineout led to a Richard Brown try to put the Reds 5 points up on 6 mins. Clifton tried to strike back but they were repeatedly beaten back on the gain line. From a lineout 35 yards out Jack Oulton broke to streak to the line for a converted try. A few minutes later Kyle Bradley added another try to put the Reds 17 points to the good. Clifton now enjoyed a period of possession and fashioned a lineout in Hellfire Corner but the Reds made a mess of the Clifton lineout and cleared their lines. Connor Gilbert having his first start of the season was having a great game and from a lineout on the Clifton 22 took the ball on the gain line to burst his way to the lie for the bonus point try.
Clifton proved they were not going to go away and late in the half dotted down a converted try in Hellfire corner.
Half-Time: Redruth 22 – 7 Clifton
If Clifton had any thoughts of a comeback they were snuffed out almost immediately in the second half as Ed Pascoe went over for a great team try. The Reds were monopolising possession, making ground at will and were all over the Clifton lineout. Fraser Honey who had a bit of an off day from the kicking tee added a Penalty on 50 mins and then Steele Barker scored a converted try on 53 mins to make it 37 – 7 to the Reds. Clifton's woes were compounded when Marcus Nel received a Red Card for foul play. Redruth Charity Trusts Man-of-Match Connor Gilbert added another try on 67 mins to cap a great return to the starting XV. Jack Oulton was another to catch the eye even managing to intercept a Clifton pass from a lineout! Indeed in was Jack who notched the Reds 8th try of the day. In the dying moments of the match Clifton who never let their heads drop scored a consolation try.
"We were poor today. IN the first 20 minutes we made so many errors and we gave them so much. They are a quality side, they not only do the basics so well, they know their game plan and they executed it perfectly today. They didn't make any errors. We need to look at our basics; we've had a bang, it's a hard place to come and win but to come and not really fire a shot is disappointing. We win together, we lose together - we won't fragment or panic. We need to address this, which we will and then we will look at OA's next week. We can't dwell on this performance but we need to be so much better."
