Former Weston Captain moves to Station Road

Clifton are pleased to announce that they have secured the signing of center Marcus Nel ahead of the 2020/21 season. Nel signs from Weston having established himself in the starting XV between 2016 and 2019 and being handed the captain’s armband ahead of the 2019-20 season.

A physical presence in midfield as well as an outstanding communicator, Nel led Weston to 2nd in the table last year, narrowly missing out on promotion. His performances for the team made him a player that Matt Salter was keen to add to the squad. For Nel the challenge to compete at a higher level in National League Two South was just too good to turn down as he signed for Lavender And Blacks last month.

Speaking to the Weston Mercury on his departure, Nel said:
“I had been approached by the club to join earlier in the year and when we narrowly missed out on promotion I made the decision to further the conversation,”

“It was quite a frank conversation, we spoke about how they play, how they felt that I could maybe fit in and their aspirations, which was all great to hear.

“I’m extremely excited to be moving, although it was a tough choice. I really hope the season goes ahead in some shape or form and I get an opportunity to challenge myself at that level.

"Clifton are clearly a quality club with some great pedigree having sustained National League Two South since I’ve at least been here.

“They also have indicated great aspirations which is great to hear. This combined with their steep history should make it a great club to play for. I’m extremely excited for the opportunity.”

Matt Salter was keen to highlight Nel's ability as a player as well as a leader. "He's a great communicator and leads well, that chat on both sides of the ball is massive for us and he understands how we want to play the game. He adds more physicality in midfield which we may have been lacking last year, but also that ability to distribute and bring people in off him. We are excited to see how he goes and he has already made an impression in pre-season."
