Match report: Clifton Rugby v Redruth

Sam Harrison14 Nov 2016 - 00:02

An unfortunate loss at home with the visiting side taking victory in the final moments.

This nail biting encounter was won for the Cornishmen through tries from their ever alert winger Alex Ducker who twice intercepted Clifton passes to score. This was a real battle throughout and the home side will be disappointed with the outcome which ended their winning run. Redruth’s determination sealed the victory.

Clifton began with a fine break by centre James Newey who fed Finlay Sharp to cross. The response from the Reds was immediate with the speedy Ducker intercepting a Clifton pass to run the full length of the pitch to score with Angus Taylor adding the extras. Clifton’s backs continued to exert pressure and following an attack Brad Barnes kicked a penalty to give his team the lead.

The Redruth pack then seized advantage with Matt Gidlow going over with Taylor converting. After the break the more energetic visitors pressed with Ducker again intercepting for Taylor to convert and increase the lead

The Clifton pack and midfield came back strongly with the game punctuated with injuries. The pressure eventually created an opportunity for Jack Watters to power into the corner with Barnes converting from the touchline. An astute Barnes chip allowed Watters to cross again. With the score at 20-21 a penalty opportunity went begging for Clifton.

Deep in injury time Shaun Buzza was propelled over with Taylor again converting

A big thank you must go to our Under 9s side who provided half time entertainment and a guard of honour for both sides entering the field.
