Clifton Misfits 21 - 32 Broad Plain 1st XV
Despite challenging winter conditions, Clifton Misfits hosted second-place Broad Plain at Station Road in what turned out to be a hard-fought encounter.
Clifton welcomed back forward Pete Anderson from an overseas work assignment, and last season’s top scorer, Jason Grinstead also made his return on the wing.
In a poignant moment, club stalwart Jamie Stevens stepped in at full-back, taking over the captaincy for his final match before a move to Australia.
Broad Plain took an early lead with a try following extended possession. The conversion made it 0-7.
Broad Plain extended their advantage with a penalty after Clifton’s ill-discipline.
The hosts struck back with a brilliant individual effort from fly-half Will Lang, who intercepted a loose Plain pass to sprint home from 70 yards to score and then cooly despatch the conversion from out wide.
Broad Plain though remained undeterred and responded instantly with a well-executed forwards’ try, leaving the score at 7-15 at the break.
Half-time Score: 7-15
Clifton came out strong in the second half, with substitute Luiz Gutierrez immediately scoring from close range. Lang again converted, bringing the score to 14-15.
Clifton’s efforts were impeded though when they were reduced to 14 men after prop Ross Rochelle was yellow-carded after multiple infringements, giving Broad Plain a man advantage.
Broad Plain capitalised on their numerical superiority, scoring another try and converting it to extend their lead to 14-22.
The visitors added another try out wide followed by a penalty from Broad Plain to pretty much seal the win.
The final quarter was marred by injuries for the Lavender and Blacks including a concussion for centre Dylan Speight.
Clifton though were determined to have the final say and despite not finishing several other chances, some sustained possession and dynamic attacking play eventually led to Anderson finishing off a well-constructed try, which Lang converted.
Full-time Score: 21-32
Despite the loss, Clifton can take pride in their performance, especially in the face of a strong, street-wise Broad Plain side.
The Misfits fought hard throughout, with notable performances from their young contingent, including second-rower Dylan Ormsby, who caught the eye as well as centre Cam Silverthorne.
Senior players Pete Anderson, Chris McCaan and Rowan Tweedale also put in solid shifts.
Thatcher’s Man of the Match though was awarded to Jamie Stevens by the club Chairman. Steven’s striking runs from full-back were a constant threat and repeatedly put Clifton on the front foot.
This marked Jamie's last appearance for the club as he departs for Australia with his partner Amber. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jamie for his loyal services over the past few seasons and wish them both the very best.
Jamie has played a big part in a very successful period for the Wanderers and has also earned a 1st XV, cap as well as turning out for the Misfits on numerous occasions during his tenure, scoring an impressive 31 tries and boasting an impressive win ratio of over 70% in his 49 competitive outings.
….You will need to return one day for your 50th Jamie.
Next week, the Misfits travel to Old Bristolians, looking to build on the positives from this competitive and spirited encounter.
