Misfits share spoils against Yate

WANDERERS 28-7 BRISTOL SARACENS 1st XV

Clifton Wanderers made the short trip over the hedge on Saturday to play local rivals Bristol Saracens.

After almost two months without a game, there were some uncharacteristic errors from Clifton throughout the day as the team ground out a hard fought victory.

The first try of the game was scored 10 minutes in by the home side after an audacious offload and lucky bounce saw them score out wide. This would be the last points they managed during the game, which is testament to the solid defence of the Clifton side.

The first Wanderers score came courtesy of Max Murphy, who crashed over from short range 20 minutes in.

The second came on the 25 minute mark from prop Ben Edwards.

The third try was scored by Harry Leigh, who finished an incisive Clifton line break from within their own 22. This left Clifton 21-7 up at the break, playing downhill in the second half.

Most would have expected Clifton to take the game away from Saracens in the second half, as they have done with pretty much everyone else this year, but it was not to be the case. Saracens dominated the ruck area and a high penalty count for Clifton meant that they scarcely had the ball in hand. Despite this, and the yellow carding of number 8 Ed Grinsted, Clifton didn’t allow Saracens a single point and showed real heart to keep repelling the Saracens attacks. The icing on the cake and the bonus point try was scored by Matin Nassiri in the final five minutes from the back of a driving maul. There was to be one final bit of action on the last play of the game, when one of the Saracens players was red carded for a deliberate stamp on a Clifton player, clearly letting the occasion get to him.

Man of the match was awarded to back row Dylan Webb, who epitomised the grit and determination of the Clifton side. His solid ball carrying, his big hits in defence and his work around the park made him the stand out candidate for the award.

MISFITS 31 - 31 YATE

It was a big week for the misfits this week as there were some questions that needed answers.

Clifton started strong out the blocks despite the injuries that have plagued the squad paired with the fact that it was only the second game back of the season. Webb started the scoring early only 6 mins into the game.

Yate we’re no easy pack and struck back with there experience scoring 3 tries in succession pegging the scores to 17-5 to the away side 30 mins end. Clifton needed to dig deep and with wonder boy Kinny making a late appearance at the 30 minute mark reset the pack and brought some freshness to the squad opening up Yates weak points with some thunderous runs. Yate we’re under some serious pressure at the half time time point.

Deservedly Osbourne opened up the yate D 5 mins into the 2nd half with Lang converting the try, very honourable mention to Patrice the flash King who definitely had his running shoes on with his 40 m dash securing a meat pie for himself with lang converting, putting Clifton ahead by 3 points. Yate bit back scoring after 5 mins with a conversion. Clifton needed to dig deep with shaw scoring a big try and veteran Pomph storming a 60m run and claiming a meat pie with captain Pablo assisting. With 4 mins left yate scored leaving end score a 31-31 split.
