Thornbury put to the Wand !

Clifton Wanderers v Thornbury 2's. 14th Sept 2013.

Hello Touchline Tarquin here…On a bright afternoon the Wanderers took to the field against a Thornbury side that had a few familiar faces, some having played in the Thornbury first team. Perhaps they were returning from injury or is it a sign of competition within the ranks of the Thornbury Club!
The Wanderers, with no mean effort from skipper Allen Williams and Scrum Half Jamie Allen, managed to put together a squad of 16 for the game. It meant that we had some guys playing in areas that may not be their first choice of positions. eg Alex Dare doing a manful job on the Wing, Rob Penhale playing in the Second Row and Andy Blowers throwing in at the line out.
The game was played at a high tempo right from the off with the opening exchanges synonymous of the first game of the season. There was a very early period where we had three Pens awarded for us, deep in their 22, choosing to scrummage as we had the superiority in this area, Showed the confidence of the side, unfortunately we didn't get the try’s directly from these scrums, although a first try was not far away.
This gave the side the confidence it needed to overcome a slightly nervy start. Some strong runs from the back row Beer, Dennison and James rampaging everywhere and the power house midfield of Massey and Milne caused quite a few problems.
Good work at the breakdown allowed us to turn the ball over on a number of occasions and play against a broken defence where we could move the ball quickly with plenty of support runners on hand Including the galloping winger Dare !.
We finally ended up scoring 6 tries and converted 5 of them to give us a convincing victory. The whole side was disappointed in the missing of one kick and blame must fall on Scouse Will for this , Its back to the Johnny Wilkinson Clinic on Monday Will !
Strong performances came from all over the field, all action Lewis Beer. Livewire Jamie Allen, And hard hitting, strong carrying centre Dave Massey, ably assisted by Dr Tom Milne had frequent consultations with their back line. And the front row trio of Denton Boot and Wallis were both strong and mobile.
It was a Great way to start the season, and very enjoyable to watch from comfort of the late summer sun.

I understand it is Avonmouth at Home next week which will also be a stern test. Though these lads will no doubt relish the challenge.
