Our boys put in another fine performance to notch up a 51-5 win over St Bernadettes in the Bristol Combination Cup.

In the warm-up the focus was on not underestimating a side who had given Cleve a run for their money the previous week.

And we got off to a good start after receiving the kick-off, making powerful progress and driving our way into their 22. It led to their fly-half having to make a clearance kick under great pressure, and it headed towards full-back Matt some 30 yards from their tryline.

Matt caught the ball excellently on the run and accelerated past three players to score a try which set the tone for the day.

We went on to score nine tries in total with Dom, Owen, Luke, Archie, Herbie among those dotting down.

Deft handling between backs and forwards combined with efficient rucking created the opportunities that led to our scores.

We’re developing a consistent and bright 15-man style of play for which much credit must go to Alex and Gary for their Wednesday coaching sessions, backed up by new boy Richard’s work with the backs.

Thanks go to the ref who had to step in at the last minute (before racing back to serve at the bar after the game). He ensured a fair contest at the breakdown and, being an ex kicker himself, even coached Archie with his conversions. In fact Archie’s striking of the ball definitely improved over the course of the game.

As Nick has already stated in his email, there is training on Wednesday (October 19) and Sunday (October 23).
