Clifton v Rumney

This was an impressive home win (38-27) against a powerful Rumney side who had beaten us at their Cardiff ground earlier in the season.

We started strongly and got our just rewards for a lot of pressure in their 22 when Kit stretched out to score from a ruck. Finn slotted over the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

We continued to dominate possession and territory before new flyhalf Ollie Hole sold a lovely dummy to race over to make it 12-0.

Then, we saw a rare occurrence as a back move paid off when Ashe cut a great line to score under the posts, with Ollie making the conversion for a 19-0 lead at halftime.

A key moment came as Rumney began to fight back early in the second half. A kick landed on our line and Ryley was determined to lead a counterattack, spinning the ball out to Sam C on the right touchline.

The pass will probably go down as an assist, even though Sam had some 90 metres to go to finish off the move. Ollie converted for a 26-0 lead.

Rumney then showed how dangerous they can be with three tries, one from a lineout 5 metres out when our throw fell to their unmarked player who flopped over uncontested.

George, however, returned the compliment a few minutes later when their lineout misfired near their line and he pounced to make the score 31-15.

We increased our lead with some nice hands down the backline that ended with a smart finish by Sam Sproull on the left wing. A superb conversion by Finn from out wide made it 38-15.

Rumney hit back with a couple of tries to leave the final score 38-27.

Overall this was a great test of our ability. But it was just as big a test of our character with emotions running high after an "ugly incident" in the first half reduced both sides to 14 players.

The boys should be rightly proud of this win, our best of the season so far.
