Clifton U14s get back to winning ways at Station Road

The morning started with the remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Clifton memorial. The last post and two minutes silence were impeccably observed. Thank you to Weston-super-Mare RFC u14s (players, coaches, and parents) for joining us.

To the match. Clifton started well scoring within the 1st minute. The team got into shape straight away and were organised. After several phases working WSM over to the edge the ball was brought back to the open with fly half Stan Cannings-Banks outpacing the cover to score.

Dominating territory and possession Clifton scored again after 11 minutes. Stan CB scoring again near the posts (conversion Stan). After 15 mins and another multi-phase move going 'same way' to stretch the defense Thomas Hargreaves playing flanker, making his return from injury, finishing the move with a try in the corner.

From the kick off Clifton collected the ball through no.8 Zach Hingston who took the space in front of him passing before contact to Harry Searle, inside centre, who had the pace to run in from his own half going round under the posts (converted Stan CB).

It was WSM who finished the scoring in the first half with a try of their own. Burgling the ball from a Clifton lineout 5m from our line and going over in the corner. Half time 24-5.

Six changes at half time saw lots of new combinations in the backs and credit to those players for continuing the positive work from the first half. So positive in fact that Tommy Garner, inside centre now, attacking the line at pace scored within a minute of the restart.

Next up was no.8 Zach Hingston who, after more positive team play and phases that stretched the defense, was on hand in the WSM 22 to run in for a try in the corner.

To round off another impressive individual performance Stan CB scored his hat trick ten minutes into the 2nd half, converting it himself.

A Clifton try of the season candidate came next which saw some great straight attacking running in the centre of the pitch. Set up plays by the forwards followed by Tommy Garner slicing a great line at pace and manging a great offload around the 10m line to Harry Searle, back on now at no.8, who took it to the line for his 2nd score (converted Stan CB).

Clifton finished with a great team try on 22 minutes which saw the ball move through multiple pairs of hands, forwards and backs, outside centre Dexter McVeigh cutting back in to beat the cover to score (conversion Harry S).

The final score didn't flatter Clifton but credit to WSM. At a point in the 2nd half, they noticeably increased their physicality and made Clifton respond. For Clifton it was great to see some of the patterns we have been introducing in training being used to good effect on the pitch. It's hard to play what you train so credit to the boys.

You can't really mention all the players in the match reports. The forwards worked hard all game and produced good ball to play with. Special hard work and graft mentions to Kledion Dushaj (2nd row) and Noah Matthews (flanker). It was also great to see both Finnian Morgan (flanker today) and Samuel Wilson (scrum half) back from injury today.

Final mention to Malcolm - thanks for refereeing. There is no match without a referee.
