Clifton Weather Storm Darragh To Go Through To Next Round Of The Cup

Clifton went 7 points up in the first 2 mins with an excellent try scored by Oli Hobson having gone through 12 phases of play, with the conversion slotted away by Josh Richardson. Another quick try followed with Harry Searle going through the gears to put the ball down between the posts. Josh stepped up to get a second conversion into the Darragh wind and Clifton were building a sizeable lead after only 4 mins. From the restart Quins looked after the ball and their talented full back broke the line to make it 14 points to 5. The Quins number 12 calmly stepped up to get the extra 2 making it 14 to 7. Quins looked like they might score again but Oli Hobson managed to make a try saving tackle on the wing to keep Clifton in the lead. Henry Bogan was having a great game and helped to keep the team moving forward. Eventually Wiliam Pape got his hands on the ball and showed a great turn of speed to score a well deserved try by running 30 metres to get to the white line. Josh stepped up to score his 3rd conversion in a row. Following a good phase of play down the wing, Oli Clark scored an excellent try and his first try since recently returning back to the club. From what was an almost impossible position Josh missed the conversion and Clifton were 26 points to 7 up. Martin Villabona was having another strong game up front showing good hands mixed with outstanding strength and determination. With only a few minutes of the first half remaining the quiet retiring William Pape scored another try from short range to get his brace. Josh scored the conversion and Clifton went in at half time 33 points to 7 up. Oli Hobson should be commended for a great first half showing magical hands by picking up a tough ball with his finger tips which helped to put us in an attacking position. This combined with his outstanding tackling and try meant his was having one of his strongest games of the season.

The second half was quite messy overall with lots of knock ons and turnover ball and with the Quins injury list starting to mount, and the game was becoming scrappy. The Quins number 8 scored the first try of the second half using his power and strength to march through the Clifton defence. Quins failed to get a very difficult conversion and the score was 33 to 12. From the restart Quins were soon down to 14 players having exhausted their bench. Matthew Wiacek kindly volunteered to play Scrum half for Quins to take them back to 15 players and at least keep it a fair contest. The game continued to remain scrappy with Quins playing mostly in the Clifton half. It was only towards the end of the match that Clifton managed to get a handle back on the game with Oli Corner scoring a try between the sticks, the ball having gone neatly through 5 pairs of hands. Josh duly stepped up to kick a conversion off his boot, as storm Darragh meant the ball wouldn't even stay on the tee. At 40 points to 12 the ref blew the whistle and the game was over. Well done to Matthew for giving it 100% for both clubs.
